Jazz When New Orleans was King;
A Modern Take on Jazz
From Its Early Years
The Music Department invites you to get in the mood for Mardi Gras early this year with a special Jazz program guaranteed to chase away the mid-winter blues. The late teens through the early 1930’s was a time when Jazz was America’s popular music. In fact, popular songs of the day often became instrumental jazz standards. Our February program meeting will feature musician and composer Rob Middleton, who will help us understand the roots and the impact of jazz from yesterday on through to the present. Rob’s duo will explore some classic tunes from the era of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. We will begin the afternoon with a delicious lunch worthy of the Big Easy and then sit back and listen to the music. Please make your reservation by Friday, February 3.
All walk-ins will pay $20.
Lunch is $15 for Club members, $20 for guests. Those wishing to attend only the program portion are invited to join us at 1:00 pm for dessert. The program only is free to members and $5 for guests.
Rob Middleton is a prize-winning composer and an active woodwind player and teacher in the New York area. He has performed in New York, around the U.S and abroad with many jazz greats, including Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Phil Woods, Harry Connick Jr., Lionel Hampton, The New York Voices, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Lovano, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Woody Shaw, Oliver Lake, David Liebman, Randy Brecker, Jane Ira Bloom, and Jim McNeely. Rob’s recent recordings, both jazz and classical, include “Open Crossings”, music of Andy Teirstein, “Live from New York” with the Birdland Big Band, “Composers in Collaboration”, new music by New Jersey women composers, and “Urban Soundscapes” with NewYorkestra, which he co-leads and writes for. Rob is also a member of the Birdland Big Band, which performs weekly at the famed Birdland Jazz Club in New York, and he is long-time member of the BMI/New York Jazz Orchestra, an ensemble dedicated to performing works created by the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop. He is a former participant in that workshop and a winner of its composition prize. His compositions and arrangements are performed regularly in the New York area and have appeared in a major motion picture, “The Thomas Crown Affair”.
Rob is a professor of music at Caldwell College in Caldwell, New Jersey.
