Girls’ Club News
Fall 2008
The Girls’ Club kicked off their season of volunteering at the annual Women’s Club Harvest Festival on October 3rd. Over 25 Girls’ Club members arrived to help the dozens of children who came to celebrate the fall season! Two days later, Girls’ Club members donated their talents to The Gas Lamp Players Costume Shop Carnival October 5th, as Glen Ridge kids gathered on Herman Street to get ready for the Halloween season.
The Girls’ Club held their third annual maniCURE Night on Friday, October 24th, upstairs at the Women’s Club. The evening was filled with games, pink manicures, and wonderful prizes! Girls of all ages (and at least one boy and several Dads) came to attend this special event. October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Girls’ Club members donated their time and effort to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Apart from these events, Girls’ Club meetings have been wildly successful, overflowing with members. Taking advantage of the wonderful pre-Candy Cane attendance, the Club is implementing a new food drive this year. So far, it’s been a huge success because girls receive their 5 points for attending general membership meetings
only if they bring the food item designated to each grade. At our October 20th meeting, Freshmen brought 34 boxes of macaroni and cheese, Sophomores brought 46 jars of peanut butter, Juniors brought 35 pounds of pasta, and Seniors brought 54 cans of tuna. The food will be disbursed to local food pantries, all of which are in great need
this season.
Girls’ Club members wrapped up October by lending hands at the Linden and Forest Avenue Schools’ Halloween events, and by helping spiff up the Women’s Club--polishing silver, washing crystal, and setting up for “The Marriage Cure”, a live theater event held at the club. This November, watch for Girls’ Club members planting bulbs with the South End Association, traveling to the Care One Senior Care facility in Livingston, and helping with the Annual Ashenfelter 8K Classic Championship Road Race held Thanksgiving morning.
Looking forward to the Candy Cane Ball December 6th!
